Prepare an Excel (xlsx) template
The steps below include examples from this spreadsheet. Feel free to use it!
- Start with an Excel (xlsx) file. You can use the example above, or use your own spreadsheet, or create a new one using Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or LibreOffice. Make sure the file extension is .xlsx
- To insert information from your monday.com account, you will need to get the DocuGen placeholders. Go to the DocuGen view you created, click on Settings > Placeholders:
- Search placeholders and click on the copy icon. For example, to insert the name of the user into the generated document, search for "name" and click on the copy icon next to "User name":
- Paste the placeholder into your document. For example, here is part of a spreadsheet where we inserted the user name, phone, and email in row 25:
- Repeat the steps to insert as many placeholders as needed.
- You can also insert a table of subitems by going to the DocuGen view > Settings > Subitem tables. Here is an example where we inserted a table called "Line items". Notice that only the first column needs to be populated with the placeholders (<<subitems...). The other columns are populated to show the formatting that will be applied; they will be overwritten by the actual data from the board:
Upload the template
Go to the DocuGen view > Settings > Template > Upload template and upload the Excel file you created above:
Preview and generate a document
Go to the Preview tab and wait a few seconds for your preview to load:
Click Generate to download a copy of the populated spreadsheet.
Power up with automation and other options
You can explore more options in Settings:
- Delivery tab: Control how your documents are delivered and update your board accordingly
- Automation tab: Generate documents using integration recipes that trigger when a user clicks a button or updates a status column
