Document templates allow DocuGen to generate beautiful documents that reflect your brand. This is how you create a template for DocuGen:
- Using word processing software such as Microsoft Word, create a new document or make a copy of an existing document; this will be your template. The template must be in Microsoft Word format (.docx). Looking for inspiration? Check out our template gallery.
- You will use 'placeholders' to tell DocuGen where to insert information from your board into your document: copy the placeholders with one click. You can also refer to our extensive list of DocuGen placeholders
- Insert the relevant placeholders into your template. For example, if you want to insert your name somewhere in the document, use the placeholder <<user_name>>.
Now you are ready to upload the Word template to the DocuGen view:
-
If you're using a DocuGen item view: Go to Settings > Template > Upload template:
- If you're using a DocuGen board view: Go to Settings > Template > Upload template:

Were the placeholders for board columns recently updated? I no longer see placeholders for board columns.
Hi Lynay – you should still be able to access board column placeholders. If you're on a DocuGen view, go to the “Placeholders” tab (under Settings). You will need to scroll down to the bottom of the page (if you have a large board, you might need to wait a few seconds for the list to appear.)
Still facing issues? Drop us a word (chat widget at the bottom left of this page) and place include a screenshot (or, better yet, a Loom video).
