Please bear the following considerations in mind when creating templates for DocuGen:
- Templates must be no larger than 20 MB. If your template is larger than 20 MB, you can do the following to reduce the file size:
- Reduce the resolution of images in the template (if any)
- Remove embedded fonts: Go to Word Preferences > Save and uncheck the box for "Embed fonts in the file"
- If you need to embed fonts in the template (for branding purposes), select the option to "Embed only the characters used..."
- Template must be in .docx file type. Other file types (.doc, .doct, .docm, etc.) will NOT work.
- Do not include comments. You must remove all comments from your document before you can use it as a template in DocuGen:
- Do not include tracked changes. You must remove (accept or reject) all tracked changes and disable tracking changes from your document before you can use it as a template in DocuGen:
- Do not hyperlink placeholders. For example, while you can insert <<view_name>> as a placeholder in the document, you should not add a hyperlink to it:
❌ <<view_name>>
✅ <<view_name>> - Do not insert placeholders in text boxes or other drawings. Instead, you should have placeholders inline inside paragraphs or tables.
- Embed non-standard fonts. If your template contains non-standard (fancy) fonts that you want to include in the generated documents, make sure to 'embed' those fonts in your template. Here is a Microsoft Support article on how to embed fonts into your document: Go to Word Preferences > Save and uncheck the box for "Embed fonts in the file". Make sure your file remains smaller than 20 MB. Please check our list of supported fonts here.
- Do not protect the document. To disable document protection, open it in Microsoft Word, go to the File menu, select Info, then select Protect document, then click Enable Editing.
- Avoid floating images. If your document contains static images such as your logo, make sure the images are inline with text. If you need to position your image at a specific location, use a table to do so. For example, if you logo must be at the top right corner of your document header, insert a two-column table in your header and place the logo image inline in the second column (you might want to align it right.)
